What I learned in philosophy?
That philosophy still counts. That is not an otherworldly conducted by a small group of people, closed in inaccessible reasoning. Or is it true?
Undoubtedly, philosophy, for most of its long history, has been academic activity. Plato's Academy was established to take forward the teachings of Socrates. The philosophy is, among other things, that activity alive for critical reflection in a specific context through which human beings strive to analyze the world in which they find themselves and to question what passes for common sense or public opinion ( what Socrates called doxa) in the society in which they live. The philosophy is analyzed pursues the public asking fundamental questions: "What is knowledge?" "That What is love? ".
The hope behind it is that the considerations raised by these universal questions produce, through surveys and arguments, or even an educational effect emancipation. The philosophy, to quote the definition of Stanley Cavell, is the education of adults.
I think the philosophy should be part of a culture of life. It must involve the public and influence the way in which a culture talks to herself, talking with other cultures and try to understand them. It is very gratifying to see this research flourish today in the agora, the virtual agora, involving and embracing public space electronically.
The company, philosophy may offer a way to dispel the many myths and ideologies that govern our lives and to propose alternative conceptual schemes. Hegel said that philosophy allows us to understand the thinking of our age. But it can also resist us in our time, to ask improper questions, difficult and uncomfortable.
Nietzsche says, "What calls himself a philosopher in the first place? To overcome in himself the right time to become "timeless" [...] But I figured, I resisted. The philosopher in me resisted it. "
Doing philosophy is not politics. Philosophy is not attributable to the business of politics. But philosophy can occupy an important place in relation to the public sphere, watching and highlighting some of his illusions and some of his shadow exchanged for real things. Philosophy is not a solitary activity and Cogita of people who ruminate on their own. In the ancient world philosophy was a collective activity conducted in the academy of Plato, the Lyceum of Aristotle in the garden of Epicurean or shade of the Stoa of the arcades.
True dialogue is to change his mind.
